I Told U Once (released 2005)

Street Anthem Records - www.streetanthemrecords.com (Produced By Marty Munsch)
New Jersey's longtime Oi-sters (that's pretty funny), Broken Heroes have come back to the forefront of hardcore Oi with their latest release "I Told U Once". If you've never heard the Broken Heroes, first you're really missing out, but as a comparison... Alright consider this: H20 meets up with the Dickies, whom throw a party where a bunch of skaters show up playing old SOD tunes, meanwhile there's a group of guys singing their favorite Oi tunes in the corner near the keg! Now, throw all of that into the blender, pulse for a few seconds, serve fast, makes quite a helping of kick ass tunes. "I Told U Once" features a bunch of influences of the band, as they seem to take a lot from skate punk of the late eighties, East Coast hardcore from the 90s and metal licks from the early 80s, all summed up into a beautiful package of Jersey street punk. The disc features fourteen tracks of varying styles and tempoes of the Broken Heroes styled oi sound, all of which really move and make you sing with your fist in the air. But what really struck me, was that even when the band switches up the beat and sound, they still manage to keep the street sound cred. I guess I'm finding it a little difficult to explain properly... The band doesn't lose something by switching the tempo; it's a different feel they present by slowing things down. But slowing down the song, simply means "We play slower, so we can play louder". And slow isn't slow by a measure of time, the songs are just as aggressive and threatening... The Broken Heroes have managed to cast a spell over you with every track, forcing you to feel the movement and the love. "I Told U Once" is an incredible release, that will certainly allow the Broken Heroes to maintain their iron grasp on New Jersey Oi. -MG

MOVIE all GROWN UP

Jason Travers, Capitol Hill massacre:
My wife was very close friends; actually former roomate, girlfriend, schoolmate and childhood friend with this guy. This sucks;
This is the only thing I can do or say because I feel regret due to some past differences of many years ago that were probably my own doing after my wife and I had started going out. Thats what happens when you open your mouth in basicly blind rage and don't appologise because some guy that happens to be a harmless x stops by to say hello. I'm Speaking about myself in a past situation. If it werent for a turn of events I would not be connected to my wife (Julie Harvey). She said he was the type of person, that would drop what he was doing to help somone who asked.

BUT- Nobody deserves to die at the hands of some weak, insipid, guttless and probably servile, pussy while they are sleeping in a chair at somones house after a party. My appologies; that are to late.

------------------ ARTICLE--------------------------

Friends and family of 32-year-old Jason Travers, one of the victims of the Capitol Hill massacre, remember him as a good listener and gentle man.

Travers had worked as a clerk at Madison Market, a food cooperative on Capitol Hill, since 1999. He was one of two people employed at the market who died Saturday morning.

"It's baffling and unbelievable," said Beau Ingraham, a friend and co-worker of Travers and another victim, Jeremy Martin. "We thought Jason was in a coma all day yesterday and we had hoped he'd pull out of it. We found out later Jason was killed while he was sleeping in a chair."

The co-op closed early Saturday after hearing the news of the men's deaths.

Travers was remembered for his gentle way of life: He was a vegan, a conscientious objector, a sometimes-Unitarian, according to his parents, who live in Albany, N. Y.

His mother, Judy Travers, said she used to call him "Atlas" because he worried so much about everyone else, it was like he was carrying the weight of the world.

"He had the soul of an angel," said his father, James Travers.

Another friend, Robyn Lively, 30, of West Seattle, said Jason Travers enjoyed listening to music and helped with fundraisers for musicians and artists.

Jason Travers was born and raised in Albany.

After graduating from Albany High School in 1991, he attended Schenectady County Community College in New York in 1991-92.

As a young college student, Travers bought his friends a van they needed for their band. That's the kind of person he was, friends and family said — generous and giving even when he couldn't afford it.

After attending college, he lived in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he helped friends set up a comic-book business. He later lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., before moving to Seattle about six years ago.

"Jason was the most gentle, beautiful person," Ingraham said. "Everyone wished they could talk to him one more time and let him know he was loved."

We found some more decent review for the NY REL-X. This should again express our elite style of making a punk band, let alone a real rock band kick ass. In this day and age of "Mc-Punk Rock" bands like: ex. "Guns On the Roof" and a bunch of other crap. Our people still stand tall, loud and proud and spitting mad above the rest. Again our track records are undisputed. Physics and history don't lie, neither do the skills of the musicians we ae involved with, or the people who choose to be involved with Punkrockrecords!

Editorial Reviews

This disc is not a debut LP, as it combines two limited-edition vinyl EPs onto a single CD. Half of the New York Rel-X are chicks, but make no mistake, vocalist Erika and bassist Adi could probably break you in half. Not that the bandmembers are thugs; they actually play rousing old-school punk rock with anthemic, enigmatic, and melodic vocals that stand out above all else, Ã la the Avengers, whose "Open Your Eyes" Rel-X covers here, nearly indiscernibly from the band's own material. However, the obvious passion the bandmembers have would make them not ones you'd want to trifle with if you were smart. ~ Brian O'Neill, All Music Guide

The New York Rel-X have one of the most outstanding lineups since Becky Bondage joined VICE SQUAD and The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols at Winterland in the 1970's. The production on this release is so top notch; that you can not find audio quality like this caliber on most recordings post 1989. This is a definitive punk LP representing New York's (and New Jersey) massive and sometimes overwhelming punk arsenal. New York City's premier Marty Munsch has done it for so many bands; I own almost every LP he has dedicated his involvement to; he really knows how to draw the poison out of a venomous animal. A must have for anyone who is serious about punk. He is Pushing the Grammy Awards this time this time and should be at least nominated for one. No wonder they call this guy the "Phil Spector of Punk-Rock".

Broken Heroes

"I TOLD YA ONCE" LPCD RELEASE ON STREET ANTHEM

Broken Heroes Formed in 1991, these New Jersey Oisters are back with a bang! This band is one of the best American Oi! bands to date, helping put Jersey on the map. With their two 7”s on Headache Records, appearances on various compilations including the infamous US of Oi! Vol. 2 and Backstreets of American Oi!, and they’re split full length CD “Beer Guts and Drunk Sluts” with Pittsburgh’s Weekend Warriors released mid-2003 right here on Street Anthem, the Broken Heroes are lookin’ to take the scene by storm. New full length “Told U Once”, recorded and produced by Marty Munsch, is going to be released early 2005 on Street Anthem Records. They’ve been playing gigs with every Oi!, streetpunk, and hardcore band on the planet and just played the Oi!/Skampilation 10 year anniversary gig in Oct. 2004. The Broken Heroes bring you their most solid material yet; mixing classic NJ Oi!, east coast street punk attitude, west coast melodies, and hardcore breakdowns that only an east coast band can perfect. Add a killer studio recording and you’ve got the best album in 2005! Street release date and more info soon to come!

I still seem to wander into new reviews of old recordings, I am amazed and sometimes astounded (also honored) to have been involved, in an abosolute influence in one of the greatest punk bands of the 1990's as well to be able to taut that I had produced this 20 Track LP "Not Enjoyin It". This says this album was the greatest of the 90's. I've read this on more than 10 different occasions.

Violent Society
Not Enjoyin' It

Not Enjoyin’ It is probably the punkest record of the 1990's. Release in 95 it composes a lot of stuff off previous seven inches with some new gems. With most bands you can fiddle around with genre's and subgenres but not Violent Society, they are first and foremost a punk band. This steamroller of a cd force feeds twenty something songs down your throat before you know what happened. Most records start to get old after 10 songs but the only time you'll have to fast forward is the 8 minutes of blank space in between "calypso" and the hidden song, what's up with that?

Not Enjoyin it contains bile filled punk rock with catchy songwriting and a perfect recording to boot which in my opinion adds up to their best record. While all of their records are good this one is the total package. Pat's vox just reeks of disgust and matches up perfectly with the pounding rhythms of the rest of the band. Violent Society is one of the only punk bands that seems to "break it down". I don't mean breaking it down in a floorpunch kind of way, but more of changing speeds in the middle of a song with guitar fills making it more interesting.

On "Fingers" they take what sounds like a long lost Sabbath riff and punk it the fuck out. Everything about this cd makes you want run around giving all the dickheads you hate in the world the finger. "You're gonna fall", "culture magnet", "Sarges last stand", "Calypso", are my favorites but the truth is there is no filler.

I just cannot express how well the songwriting is on this! Maybe that's part of the reason they crossed over so many cliques when they played. You would see skinheads, punks, hardcore kids, and some dude wearing a jumpsuit at their shows which was far from the norm in the nineties or even now. If you are into punk on any level and haven't checked out this record do yourself a favor and pick this true classic up. Seriously, this is the REAL DEAL!

THE NY REL-X- "She's Got A Gun/Paranoia" cd
Produced By: Marty Munsch (TKO Records)

As you can guess from the title, this album combines
2 previously released EPs on this one CD, 'Paranoia'EP and 'She's Got A Gun'EP.
The New York Rel-X have that really cool early UK sound mixed in with an
unmistakable New York sound and it's that combination that makes this band
really stand out- it's a really successful blend. I really, really like the vocals on this and in my opinion, there's still ain't enough good female-fronted punk rock bands in
this style...Fantastic sleeve too!

The N.Y. REL-X “She’s Got A Gun / Paranoia” cd
Produced By: Marty Munsch (TKO Records)

I love this CD. This is female-fronted punk rock that runs the line between a late 70’s and mid-80’s NY sound. I don’t know exactly what the hell that means, but it is intended to be good… very good. Erika’s vocals are sung rather than screeched, and carry a lot of character. The guitars are blazin’, and the songs are just right. Their lyrics go from serious topics (such as an Orwellian future manifesting), to less serious ones (at least I hope they aren’t serious) about a woman with a taste for murder, and Fuad’s Delight where mass murder collides with cannibalism. “Now I’m so excited, the time has come / For the feast to start cause the killing’s done.” These songs originally came out as two different EPs, but are collected here for your enjoyment. Don’t pass it up. - BL

THE N.Y. REL-X "She's Got A Gun/Paranoia" cd
Produced By: Marty Munsch (TKO Records)

Funtastic female fronted punk rock that is both melodic and snotty. I want you to think the AVENGERS meets VICE SQUAD. Powerful in your face punk that is timeless as well as awe inspiring. Huge guitar riff action coupled with sing a long anthemic vocals. Plenty of punch and too much attitude. If I may comment on their sincere commit to punk, they do a "right on the mark" cover of the AVENGERS "Open your Eyes". If this is whats’s happening in NYC right now, I’m on the next red eye outta here.

N.Y. Rel-X - "She's Got a Gun / Paranoia" cd
Produced By: Marty Munsch (TKO Records)

TKO puts their best foot forward with this absolutely awesome slab of "Stand Strong, Stand Proud" era Vice Squad punk rock from the N.Y. Rel-X. A combo of the 'She's Got A Gun' and 'Paranoia' Ep's, this baby is chock full of mid-tempo bouncers that mesh a sneering late-night decadence with fun-filled political cynicism, delivered in with a gusto and energy of the late Mia Zapata of the Gits. Make no mistake, this 2 guy 2 gal outfit have their feet firmly planted in '77 UK, but the Rel-X don't hesitate to drift into the mod-cum-wave post punk of the early 80's as well. And despite roots to the contrary, the tracks here are fueled by a sound that is both exciting and fresh, bursting with charisma and charm that is virtually impossible to ignore. What the Epoxies have done for the re-emergence of full-fledged new wave, N.Y. Rel-X is doing for the classic talents of X-Ray Spex and Vice Squad, to the post-punk quirkiness of Au Pairs or Young Marble Giants. And while I have never been so bold as to make a statement that might be construed as sexist or shallow, I have gotta say that the Rel-X boast 2 of the most stunningly beautiful women in punk rock as far as I am concerned. Exhibiting brains, talent, beauty and a great sense of punk rock history are enough to make me melt. But add an undeniable sense of purpose… And the fellas manning the sticks and guitar taint no slouches either (at least from a musical standpoint). You get the feeling that everything in the N.Y. Rel-X feels right. Definitely a must for fans of early UK punk and the short list of non-shitty new wave (pre-"Rapture" Blondie?), as well as the quality current retro-hashing of the Epoxies. Cool cover art to boot; a bit of the CBGB early punk illustration action. Definitely a much needed breather from the onslaught of mid-tempo street rock from TKO as of late. Great stuff.

The New York Rel-X "She's Got A Gun / Paranoia" cd
Produced By: Marty Munsch (TKO Records)

The N.Y. Rel-X latest release has not left my CD player since I received it over a week ago. This disc features the band's two past EP’s put together on one CD from TKO Records, and it's incredible! There aren't enough female fronted bands around today, and lead singer Erika is one of the few that can actually sing. None of this “I’m going to scream because I can’t really sing” crap exists on this release. She can hold a note, and does it well. The eleven great songs on this CD are fast enough to pogo to, but not so fast that it loses its potential.

After hearing this you'll be sure to go away with songs like "Paranoia," "She’s Got A Gun" and "Third World" stuck in your head. Jon’s drumming and Adi’s bass will give you a punch in the face that you won’t easily forget, and the entire album is very tight along with the back up vocals that will really pull you in.

The Rel-X remind me a lot of early Vice Squad, and Erika definitely has the potential to be the next Becky Bondage. If you’re a fan of the Avengers, Vice Squad, Auntie Christ or X, you will definitely love this CD. TKO Records puts out nothing but the best, and they manage to do it again here with the N.Y. Rel-X. Don’t hesitate to pick it up at your local record shop, or if you really have some guts, you'll go order it via the TKO site. You won’t be disappointed.

Dead Heros have a top-flight EP out for you on Armens legendary Headache Records. These New Jersey punks and skins play solid punk rock in the NIBLICK HENBANE/WRETCHED ONES vein. The lyrics touch on the frustrations of youth trapped in the working class world of "have nots". One of the best lines is from "i hate this life": "im allergic to alcohol cause i break out in handcuffs." Good stuff!

Yes sir, got both of em yesterday. And boy was I pleasantly suprised. I used to have a shitty burn of the GMM record so it's nice to have the real thing. But the new album flat out rocks. It sounds right at home with the early stuff. Which is a good thing considering most bands that do reunions and make vain attemps at trying to bring back their old sound but lack the agression they had when they were just young bucks.

The thing I probably love the most about U.S. Chaos is the fact that you guys remind me of early DI. Or maybe early DI reminds me of US Chaos...? Either way I dig it. I just wanna know How you manage to get that west coast sound all the way out there in New Jersey? Haha.

Anyways, sorry for the long email and thanks for the quick shipment.

Just as about as sinister as you can get regarding Rock N Roll. Fierce, Fiery, Uptight and laden with very early R&B from the days gone by of let's say: Max's Kansas City and the Peppermint Lounge, toss in some
Mud Club too. Heavy rhythm, bass and drums; enough to suffocate and suck the air out of your lungs. Ripping dual rhythm Guitars. Flat out and hard as hell blistering razor like lead guitars; the kind that slapped Iggy POP in the ear with a metal belt buckle. Maybe some MC5? Dolls? We definitely did this one in NYC.Vocals reminiscent of the 1960's Trashmen gone female.

20 punk fans face charges after Asbury Park beachfront trashed
HITS ASBURY PARK..
.9-06-8-02

Published in the Asbury Park Press 9/10/02
By NANCY SHIELDS
STAFF WRITER
ASBURY PARK -- Followers of punk rock bands that appeared over the weekend at The Stone Pony wreaked havoc on the beachfront, city officials and the rock club's owner said yesterday.

The damage left city officials placing part of the blame on Stone Pony owner Domenic Santana and Santana threatening to walk away from the iconic music club.

Some of the estimated 1,500 young people, many with bright red, green and yellow Mohawks, leather outfits and body piercings, got into trouble breaking into empty buildings, including the Casino, to find a place to sleep. They also broke car windows and were cited for disorderly behavior at the Berkeley Carteret Oceanfront Hotel, which was booked solid for the weekend with festivalgoers.

Some spray-painted graffiti on Convention Hall, boardwalk pavilions and city equipment, and littered the waterfront streets, officials said.

The event, "Holidays in the Sun" featured the Exploited, the Business and the UK Sums among 60 bands on two stages, according to the event's Web site. The music went on as scheduled all weekend after the trouble, which occurred primarily on Friday night.

Santana said that 1,200 advance tickets were sold and that 1,500 people were able to get in. Many of the young people were from around the country and England and had made no lodging arrangements.

"This was like Woodstock of the punk world, and we did not realize what we were in for," said Santana, who told city officials he would pay for damages.

But Santana said yesterday he's "livid" because he believes city officials are blaming him for what happened. He vowed that he's walking away from the club that he revived two years ago.

Santana said City Councilwoman Kate Mellina pounded on the door of his home on Second Avenue at 8:30 Saturday morning, telling him that what had happened on the beachfront was "worse than Greekfest," a reference to trashing of public and private property at a summer event in past years.

"I'm out of here," Santana said. "I don't need to make a dollar from this place and be dragged out of bed in the morning.

"Let them make condos," he said of the fight the past year in which a waterfront developer proposed building condominiums on the Ocean and Second avenues site, a proposal the city and club backers prevented from happening.

"This is the straw that broke the horse's back," Santana said. "They want a bedroom community, I'll give them a bedroom community. I don't need this. I'm a successful businessman in Jersey City. I don't need the money. I'm tired. That's it, that's it, that's it."

City Manager Terrance Weldon said yesterday he was surprised to hear that Santana plans to give up the Stone Pony site.

"After the city has gone to such great lengths to preserve The Stone Pony and keep it where it is in the redevelopment, I'm shocked that Domenic would want to walk away at this time," Weldon said. "I'm sure he's going to disappoint an awful lot of people who have supported his efforts."

Santana had said there would be 1,000 people at the three-day event when he filled out his application for a special-event permit, but by 5:30 p.m. Friday, it was evident that more were coming and it was still early, Weldon said.

"When we saw that it was escalating beyond 1,000 people and that there were potential problems as a result of this, I notified Domenic that he was going to be responsible for all Public Works costs, all police costs and all emergency medical service and fire costs," Weldon said.

"I said, 'Domenic, you're saying you didn't know the crowd was this big,' " Weldon said. "So, I was just concerned, obviously about the litter, the calls our police and Public Works were getting.

"There's such tremendous effort to move this city forward that when you have young people come in and just willfully destroy city-owned property, private-owned property and conduct themselves the way these concertgoers did, it is very, very frustrating," Weldon said. "There's no need for it."

Mellina said yesterday she went to Santana's home after she saw the trashed beachfront on her way to prepare for a construction job training forum at Convention Hall. She said she told Santana he had to wait at the beachfront until Weldon could get there to talk to him.

"Second Avenue in front of the Pony was just filthy," Mellina said. "All the kids were sleeping in cars or under the boardwalk."

City police Detective Capt. Mark Kinmon said 20 arrests were made on charges including trespassing, criminal mischief, breaking of car windows, disorderly conduct and burglary. No one was arrested in the spray-painting.

Kinmon said two 20-year-olds, Jonathan Parson and Julie Kang, both of San Pedro, Calif., were spotted breaking into a vacant building at 1207 Ocean Ave. about 2 a.m. Saturday.

An officer reportedly saw them kick a window in and arrested them. When Parson was placed into the back seat of a police car, Kang ran to the other side of the car and let him out, Kinmon said.

Both were caught and face charges of burglary, resisting arrest and escape

The New York Rel-X: She's Got A Gun / Paranoia 8 -1- 02

TKO Records
9 out of 10
2002

Hey Marty,

This is Dave, the guy ya talked to at CBGB. We also talked before at Krome. I was the guy w/ the "1945" shirt. I just thought I'd drop you a line if this is indeed the correct e-mail address to send a "hello" too.

I am not a big U.S. Chaos fan, but I am digging your site. Well I definitely left it learning a bit more hehe. So I just thought I'd say hi & let ya know I like what yer doing concerning the site & what it's about. So congrats to that.

Well I am gonna get going. Maybe I'll catch ya at a show. Even though I am not much a fan of The Threats or The NY Rel-X maybe I'll see ya at that CBGB show. Well take care & it was nice talking to you again & very informative hehe. Who knows if I ever get this guitar thing down maybe I might take advantage of your studio skills sicne you said you are the best. And whenever I do get this music thing going I definitely want to do something a bit revolutionary concerning Punk music, but that might not happen for awhile. We'll see. Well have a great night. Peace!

The Scottish punks that became known worldwide as the Exploited began their onslaught nearly 20 years ago. While they never enjoyed the pleasure of being as exploited as such movie-making punks as the Sex Pistols or the Ramones, the group was instrumental in defining punk. Their bilious "Fuck the Mods" (recorded here by NJ oi group Squiggy) suggested more violence than the Ramones' "Beat on the Brat" or Dayglo Abortions' "Kill the Poseur." Present are other anthems of venom, like "I Hate You" (covered by Pennsylvania's Violent Society), but that's not all this group was about. Toward government and authority of all kinds they bore a vicious cynicism. Toward that end, NJ oi band Niblick Henbane resurrect "Cop Cars" with its "mee-mar, mee-mar" onomatopoeia of a police siren, NY old-school punkers Abalienation offer a rendition of "Don't Pay the Poll Tax." Other classic punk rock acts that turn up for this part include the UK's Special Duties ("Sid Vicious Was Innocent"), New Jersey's US Chaos (with the very anti-American "USA") and Billyclub, which features Karl Morris of the Exploited. All in all, there are 17 cuts by different groups honoring one of punk's truly seminal bands. ~ Tom Schulte, All Music Guide

Some Pre-Session Notes.
NY REL-X

The Publisher:
We Just got word that we will be doing production on The New NY REL-X EP For TKO RECORDS
Mark Rainy, is a cool guy and we respect his vision in the music world.

The Sessions will run a few days in March and finish to be handed in for publication by April.

The Recordings:
Be prepaired to get a snowball with a rock in it, thrown at you from a third grade kid at the bus stop!

We express a high degree of enthusiasm because:
The NY Rel-X have the type of drive we don't often see and hear in many punk bands today. If you give them a close listen, the feeling is quite evident that the sounds are very close to the late 1970's punk generation. Lately punk sounds have eluded the modern movement and It's true colour for about 10 years.

The Band:
They have a very hard, but rock n roll feel that was very present in 1978-1981 era. Typical of avengers and television, patty smith group and talking heads if you can fathom that. But you can't because your young and havn't goten it yet.You will be very pleased to hear some music make singing sense.

The Feeling:
Not just screaming female vocals maybe a tinge of XENE -"X" from Erika, just maybe. Adi kicks out an enormous powerful bass and is systematically backed by John Cray on the drums. The mind reading is what 99.9% of bands lack in a live performance. The Vocals from ERIKA, Formerly of Banner of Hope; are equally as straight forward and slightly reminiscent of Avengers but better with a real singing tonality capable of harmonics say like Souxie singing for the Avengers! more thoroughly powerful and distinct with a mid tone punch most female singers fail to have. Then to back it even more, is the prodigy guitarist Turk. Who Eats, Drinks and plays and virtually smells of 1976 CBGB's era punk crowd (with exception of the freefall down the stairs to the bathrooms). This guy is the living embodiment of what KRAUT and the DEADBOYS wanted to have in a combined lineup. Were possibly dealing with the best of the best, in this range of music. I wouldn't call it limited, due to it's younger appeal, like most people complain about. 'The band that has yet to show it's real side. Some kids are not ready for this groups self evident truths. After 9/11 they are the HERE AND NOW.

Punk is punk these days and to me it hasn't changed for the better. Something has just told me things are changing NOW and for the better.
I think it has just got to come from these people, who will show what's real and what's not rock n roll.

Some of you will be jealous and some thankful, that this band has just arrived in time to stop the cerebral hemorrhage of rock n roll. Maybe they are (and will be a seminal and most possibly the quintessential) THE NEXT BIG THING; you be the judge give us comments here.

Be prepared to get a snowball with a rock in it thrown at you from a third grade kid at the bus stop!

Possible world record and standard set for fastest mixdown of a full album with over 12 songs.
might have been broken by Marty Munsch and Robert Both on the Statch and The Rapes LP (formerly as James Browns' producer and engineer 14 years, yeah that guy that invented rap beats) in reguards to this record and standard is being researched and catagorised by th Guiness Book Of World Records as we speak. There were 18 full songs recorded to a 2 reel of magnetic tape at 30" per second speed. A total of 18 songs were included on the multi-track master that holds a total of 24 tracks, that can be used to include different instruments, effects or other. Tracks then combined to create a commonly known medium that is duplicated to a standard stereo format, that is then used as a master for Viynal, Cassette, or CD duplication that is sold to the public in stores. There is possibly no current standard set or in existance . Marty Munsch and Robert Both also have involved with the longest ending note hold of a single song, that surpassed the Beatles 1972 "A day iIn The Life" off Abby Road album that was never submitted. This is also in dispute.

U.S. CHAOS / STATCH AND THE RAPES
"We Are Your Enemy" Split 7”
US Chaos: “Blame It on Sam” was recorded in ‘83, lost, refound almost
twenty years later, and finally pressed. It stands up as catchy as, say, The
Vibrators in a very bad, very cynical mood. It’s poppy in a mid-tempo,
swaggering way, and the song’s basically about fucking shit up, not taking
personal responsibility, and blaming the powers that be. Oddly soothing.
Statch and the Rapes win the “Most Offensive Band Name Title” for the year
and I wish the band was as aurally off-putting to back it up. They’re pretty
tame and in a strange way remind me of a PG version of the Anti-Heros,
where the songs are half spoken, half yelled, the lyrics are real easy to follow,
and the instrumentation ain’t bad, but unlike the Anti-Heros, they don’t seem
to have a lot of teeth and snarl to back up the barking. Not poo, but my pants
aren’t on fire, either. -Retodd (Punkrockrecords) -1/2/2002 6:03:00 PM

And still the reviews leak in from 1999 thru 2001.

1.The first two albums from the first U.S. Oi band ever. Sprung from the loins of the ugly New Jersey early '80's and raised on all the wallop that a hard fist, and a pair of jack boots can deliver. 12 tracks of street-wise rebellion.

2. "Punk's Not Dead: A Tribute to the Exploited" CD compilation from Radical Records. Exploited covers by: Blanks 77, Bruisers, Road Rage, Niblick Henbane, Heidnik Stew, the Cuffs, and more. These bands sound a lot like the Exploited, and if you liked them or just like these bands, this album is for you. If not, then it's not. At least US Chaos had the good sense to cover "Fuck the USA" as simply "USA." Scary cover art. "xx"

Speaking the truth on punk...1980's

Hello, my name is Johny. I think most of you know me and most of you may not. Let me start by saying I read Tom's post and then Elliots response, just like the website said too. I don't nessacarily agree with either of you. No offense or anything, but i've been going to shows now for a very long time, and i've seen this scene at its peak and i've seen it at its worst of times. I thought id just fill every one in on how i view this topic. As far as right now, New Jersey, is not the place i remember when i got into punk. I don't like to dwell on the past but theres just so much that has shifted in the past decade or so. New Jersey's scene was dominated for the most part by the ska skin scene. Also the Oi! Scene had a huge following started in the 80's by US Chaos and the Wretched Ones.
No-one today remembers those bands, everyone just wants to suck AFI and Aus Rottens dick. As far as punk went, allot of bands existed and are not remembered, same thing with the kids. Im sure everyone thats reading this can name five kids easily who "hung up their boots". Its a shame that everyones views on punk rock are so distorted. Its not about saving animals, spiking your hair, hard core breakdowns, passing out pamphlets on saving some country I've never even heard of. I think everyone is wrong. Me, personally... i have many of my own views politically and socially, im not going to preach and bore the readers to death, because that is not what i do. All in All its 2001. This scene is to Politically Correct. In 1977 a british band topped the charts, this band wore nazi insignia and spit on their audiences. "What racist piece of shit band is that Johny?" The Sex Pistols. In the early 80's a new type of faster punk was invented, They wore leather and spiked their hair. Their sound is hardcore punk, it gave influence to all of the bands people listen to know, Casualties, Unseen, AGT, Virus, etc. Around the same time a band called Discharge, which unlike most know started in 1978 (their sound was way ahead of their time). Socio Political activists fled the hippie scene when it fell in the mid seventies and collaborated with the art scene, what did it create?
Crass, political punk, etc. Emo is pure garbage and if you listen to it, your shit. Same thing with any of the post SubHumAns members started, total and utter crap. It would be fun if people could all go to the same show. My best example would be 5 years ago or so, to the days of the Pipeline. Everyone got along, the place was a home to Hardcore, Emo, Goth, Oi!, and Street Punk. I wish so much there was a club like that today, some say the M&M hall which isn't bad at all. All we can do is hope the scene works for everyone. I wish every band the best of luck. Every club the best of luck. And i hope every kid maintains the will to stay with it. Im going to wrap this up, its 9:00 Am and i'm certain this article is poorly written, so come talk to me at a show if you want to
continue this... you all know who I am. remember i don't side with anyone, i listen to Discharge, I listen to Skrewdriver, I listen to Conflict, and i listen to Exploited. Accept change for the better or
the worst. --Johny Swill Bastard

If you are from Long Island, and got into punk rock in the mid
90s, then odds are, you know what Motherbox records is, and
you've probably met Paul Motherbox before. At the first show I
ever attended, two bands by the names of SLEEPASAURUS,
and WESTON, were on the bill, and I totally fell in love with
the style of music they played, and thus became interested in
the label that their material was put out on. Corresponding
with that, I met Paul Motherbox as he set up shop at the show
with all of his 7" vinyl records, and cds. I picked up a catalog
of his and noticed that all cds at the time were only $6, and
that really hooked me in - though I had no clue on who any of the bands on his label were. At a
subsequent show, I gambled and purchased a cd by a little known band called VIOLENT SOCIETY - Paul
said that if I liked the CASUALTIES, I would like them too. He was right. I am fortunate enough to own a
first pressing of the first VS album, (with the green text) and over time, Motherbox became an integral part
of my punk rock addiction. Unfortunately, bad things started to happen for Motherbox in the past year or
so, and they have progressed from not so good to not good at all. As of now, Motherbox is on hiatus, and
some may question why I would want to print an interview from someone who is not quite involved
anymore with the current punk scene, but I think that Paul more than deserves any press he gets, and his
knowledge and experience within punk rock is worthy for anyone of any age. Motherbox represented
everything that a small independent punk rock label should have, and if you get the chance, check out
their back catalog MORE BELOW

OTHER RANTS ABOUT SOME ALBUMS I'VE BEEN HEAVILY INVOLVED WITH
Mind you all the years ago and b.s. that went on, still I hold high respect for these friends and members of
the band called VIOLENT SOCIETY, these times "no matter how distraught you guys", will
always be a very definative point in my life. History can't be erased and we all know what we did to offer our part. Heres some things, for the people don't know what went into these albums. I could talk for hours about the production of the albums and singles and then the fights that ensued afterwards that have shaken me to the core. Some way i wish this never happened. I guess as you get older you recognise whats important in life. I never thought I'd hear my mouth spew what it did at friends. People just don't do that.
I'll sign to that.

-(Marty Munsch)

Violent Society are one of my all time favorite bands. No band has helped my label
more, and that is the honest truth. After “Not Enjoyin’ It” the VS guys had talked abou
doing a 10”, they had their minds set on it. After talking to Jeremy at Ci Records in
Pennsylvania it was decided that we would do a split label release, and it would in fact be a
10”.
Recorded at Creep in PA, I think that this release comes closer to the live
performance then any other VS studio recording. Two pressings of the 10” sold out, and it
has not been repressed on vinyl since then. In the fall of ’98 Ci repressed this with some
extra tracks (including their track on the More Kaos comp) on CD format.

Under the Volcano #34
Finally a punk band that doesn’t use a graffiti tag writing for it’s artwork, and whose
members didn’t have hobo sized pants that look like they’re packed with a big load of shit.
I’ve been keeping an eye on Violent Society since their split cmae out on Rot N’Roll which
they were paired with a rather dreadful band, but that’s another story. Violent Society this
time have teamed up with Ci Records in PA and Motherbox Records in NY and put this
sucker out. A very smart move considering that Paul Motherbox isn’t one of those
agoraphobic revolutionary loudmouths. Anyway, this is a good Punk record! No new jack
hip hop hybrid bullshit, just straight forward Punk Rock. They’re loud, they’re snotty, and
their good musicians to boot. I couldn’t recommend this enough, especially at a time when
punk is looking and sounding a lot like a badly scripted sequel to Body Rock. Spend your
g-money on dis bee-atch!!!

Supplicant #1
Vioelnt Society are red hot, the best hardcore punk band on the east coast. This is no
exception. The production kinda sucks, but it doesn’t matter. Everything from “Wake up
and Die” to ‘till the needle picks up will have you circle slamming around your room. In a
word, AWESOME. An interesting aside: I hear this was recorded as a live set in the
studio, with no breaks between songs. I wish more bands would do that, punk’s
frighteningly slick these days.

Stomp it Up #1
Wowee, that’s a long title to deal with, but this and the Blanks 77 have the best record-only
release of 1996, tying with the Blanks “Up the System.” Hardcore punk at it’s best.

Useless #2
Violent Society are one of the best punk bands around. While this didn’t quite blow me
away with the immediacy of their CD, comparing the two would be like contrasting “Return
of the Jedi” to “Empire Strikes Back.” Yes, the ewoks are annoying as fuck, but in the
grand picture it’s still a pretty darn good flick, just not the complete masterpiece which
“Empire” is.

No Reason #1
Good straightforward punk. Most songs are fast and not melodic, with the vocals being just
as fast. They have some Oi sounding songs here, but most songs remain fast throughout.
I guess this is more of a traditional, older punk rock. These guys cover Minor Threat and
Agnostic Front live. The lyrics are in the typical punk vein, somewhat political. No sappy
shit.

Flipside #104
You know what? The title track they got here says it all!! While all the parasitic majors and
their puppet pseudo-indie labels waste all their time and your money trying to sell you more
of their latest poseur act CD’s, there’s still tons and tons of REAL punk rock out there in the
REAL underground, and this here is but one of them. Here is like eleven tracks of some
hard hitting rock and hardcore from these guys. Some of the stuff is more like ’81 punk,
some of it is ’84 early hardcore, but all is done with a good heaping of aggro. There’s no
sign of these guys wimping out…I know, as I’ve kept up with these guys since their demo.

F.O.E. #33
This is fucking rip roasring punk fucking rock!! Angry, thick, aggressive, great song writing.
If you like Brit punk, anarcho sounding punk, DIY punk, 80s hardcore or anything else that
rages, get this.

Maximum Rock N Roll #159
Great follow up to their “Not Enjoyin’ It” CD. Raging hardcore punk heavily influenced by the
early 80s sound, that’s speedy and catchy, with the vocals coming through clear enough for
the listener to pick up on what’s being said. These guys have nothing pleasant to say, no
songs about cats or unrequited crushes, just songs telling the world to fuck off. I can
definitely go for that.

Lets not say all of the people that think towels are hats, are terrorists, please. Treat The people that left the country or place that hides these cum guzzling jackasses (that fuck animals like real woman), like they want to be treated. They came here to escape oppression. So the oppressors followed the cunts to my home and shit in my backyard, destroyed my favorite place to work, see in the morning when I drive to work and get a nice view from when I'm on lunch or take the train home from work. Well lets deal with it diplomatically. See, everyday now when I have to work, I have to smell all these DEAD ROTTING Corpses, that were once parents-moms-dads-grandparents-kids-brothers-sisters-aunts and uncles and cousins, not to mention friends. I usually don't like stress, now I feel like every time I go to the seven-eleven, or gas station, that I've got to suspect that someone is trying TO KILL ME or MY WIFE. I sometimes think I kinda like my job. Just think, how would you react to some mule fucking freak with a machine gun and a death wish from our country came to your "cave, tent, or grass hut" and set it on fire. Well that's what's going to happen. Lots of MAD Mule fucking RED-NECK mother fuckers are going to your home and will inhumanly, RAPE, PILLAGE, PLUNDER and make asses of your societies icons and leaders. They will build a McDonalds and fuck your twisted perversion, of what you call GOD in the ass with a broken COCA-COLA BOTTLE. 08-09-01 REVIEWS US CHAOS/STATCH & THE RAPES 'We Are Your Enemy' (prr(s)-1057) Split
45 2001

Split 45''s are pretty common in today's punk scene, but rare to come across 2 tracks that grab yer by
the balls and underline the reasons you stuck with punk all this time. 'We Are Your Enemy' has been
glued to my stereo ever since it arrived! First up are US Chaos who daub in big, thick, black indelic ink
why they're important. They recorded this track way back in 1982! A week before the Misfits stuck
down their debut album 'Walk Among Us' (in the very same studio too). So it's got a history and an
atmosphere curtsey of Mr Munsch's knob twiddling. US Chaos deliver a mid-paced monster in 'Blame
It On Sam'. And its a gem of a song and everything good punk rock is or should be. It's got power
chords, tunes and a singer who can actually keep it interesting in a snidey kinda way, which I like a lot.
Good news is they just reformed and have an album of tracks just like this...begging to be released. So
any labels out there get your arse over to New Jersey pronto!
Flip it over and you encounter Portland's

very own Statch And The Rapes, immortalized in these very pages elsewhere. They ain't quite in the
league of US Chaos for power, but these punks intend to put that right with time. They're from here and
now and improve every time I hear em! 'Where Ya Goin Now' has got that early 80's youthful punk
taunt written all over it in big offensive letters. And the rabble are led by Statch on the snotty vocal front
...."well this is America and to hell with you!" He's coming on in leaps 'n' bounds in the "fuck you!"
stakes. And the more the merrier is all I can say. These ain't just yobbo's though, coz their song
structures are getting a lot more bolder give or take the odd bum note ha!. Still simple but highly
addictive fuzzy guitars make a mess. And it's all going on above a noxious upbeat rhythm track to
conclude their misdemeanours. 'Where Ya Goin Now' is another taster from the band who have their
debut album out very soon, I hope? Can't fucking wait!!! Both these tracks were recorded or remixed
(all be it in different decades) by Marty Munsch. He's New Jersey's answer to Dave Goodman so
cheers to Marty who kindly thrust this slab in my hands. WORLD CONTENDER Punk Rock Records

"Recanting my opinions on todays music"

- By Marty Munsch

(yes I own this site and I will write whatever I want to) Realy, I can't even begin
to remember when I put this ink to paper. It was a while back on some tyrade or
fit of chemical imbalance.

Before everyone was P/C, before you needed to have a dissertation and 15 forms of I.D. and a
triplicate form to be into PUNK. When if you saw somone who looked the part you immediately
became friends. Oh, call me a jerk, but how true it is. The punk stock market has crashed.

Black Thursday for the new 3rd generation of punk kids: But second generation of us at the age 32-36
was about 1987-88, I think to around the time when the last real shows ceased to exist, at a place called the rock hotel
commonly known as the RITZ, on east 12th st. New York City. Terribly converted, to it's origin of webster hall and some whore house of a rave club. I Learned my craft as secondary sound engineer here and was paid on a professonal level. Of the handsome some $ xxx.xx per weekend. (amount intentionaly held). My second entrance into music after a taste of the mixing console, one night of pure bliss at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic New Jersey. The band was MOTORHEAD
and the year was 1985 I was about 18 This was next to infamous: TWO-TONE (punk shop).

Myself shortly after I was 19 years old (Photo Credits to LS)

Punk falls back underground from mainstream media, January 19th 1998. Only the true ones
survived and still live, PUNK couldnt be sold because it was to real for mainstream America, MTV,
also the last generation of people of punk or should I say "MTV backwash" seemed to be mad for
one reason only. It wasn't MTV, The law, or government oppression. It was the fact that the people
that wanted to be "PUNK" were mad at what they couldnt have. That greed was generated by the
hippies that raised their kids on 13 channels of shit. A babysitter called a television. Breast fed by
the boob tube. Thus what they saw they got. Parents gave in to whatever ther kids wanted. The kids
that fell into punk with pissed off attitudes. The ones that were mad cause they did'nt get what their
spoiled asses cryed and carried on for. So they got mad. So they opted to look rebelious, they
couldnt cut it. PUNK had pissed them out of its system, back to the trashy greedy family values they
tried to convince: THEY WERE MAD...

SAYIN BYE, BYE TO LABEL SLAVERY

Bite Me Records, 28018 Easton Rd., Suite 16, Willow Grove, PA 19090

Over 74 minutes of underground sounds ranging from hardcore to punk to experimental music. Highlights the modern day
streetwise punk where the music is the main source and not the dollar sign. The bands that outshine on the compact disc include
Youth Gone Mad, whose guitars remind me of Psychotica's style, Phyber Boys, with a psychedelic dub in the punk mix,
Insomnia's aggressive p.o. hardcore sound, and the violent sounds of US Chaos that roars right in your face. 32 tracks, 15 bands --
real punk from punks.

"We Are Your Enemy"- Split U.S. Chaos/Statch and The Rapes
45 RPM reviewsby :Sufferin Suffragettes

Your record arrived safely and im just playing it. Sounds fucking great so cheers for that
copy. I think US Chaos just takes the biscuit with that big beefy guitar sound but Statch's
side is a great taster too. They're getting better with each new release. Makes a change to
get a great split 45 with both bands up my street. I'll get a review up as soon as I decide
which site to go with.

Ha! The tour news sounds hilarious. Hope they can do a tour diary it would a great read.
So the Sex Machines are the new punk catalists eh? Well I better check their site out. Your
taste in punk sure reflects my views so far, so keep it up. And cheers once again for the
review copy and stickers...great production too. It's got atmosphere maaaaan.

GOIN BACK INTO THE SWAMP...
Excerpts from 1983 album design and concepts of : U.S. Chaos' "weve got the weapons"
The whole Chaos scene was a great time. Gary told us we had to keep our artwork cost down ($600) so they could press the EP. We used every trick in the book for that cover. None of us had much money so we were good at finding cheaper ways to do things. At the time I was working at and Ad Agency in Jersey, if they only new how much of their time and money went into that cover they would've flipped!
I remember the show promoters getting bent out of shape because of the huge guest lists that Chaos would have. At every show the crowds would get bigger and bigger. They actually had a pretty grueling schedule in my eyes. Practicing during the week and doing shows on the weekend, plus regular jobs. Myself and the other artist spent quite a bit of time with these guys and the Chaos crew. Everyone was always welcome to join the fun, grab some equipment and play roadie for the night. I hope they do more shows, I've got to see them again.
Keep me posted
Thanks

I've absolutely no idea how, or why this US Chaos release came to be on my desk. And the lack of press
release doesn't fill in any gaps either! As I know virtually Jack Shit about US Chaos, it's now time to make
something up to spread this review over more than just one line. It's a one track promo from their forthcoming
album. It sounds a lot like The Stains, and it's a raw production mixing 70's, 80's and 90's techniques giving a
fresh cut sound and pretty inspiring it is too. Though 94%

THE SEX MACHINES WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE PEOPLE
And why are they so good?

(Excerpts from Sex machines site)

The Sex Machines. Who are they? What do they do? What cruel behemoth spawned these crusaders of crude? Am I safe? To the last question, the answer
is a definitive NO. To answer the remaining queries, we must take a closer look at this so-called musical group. Who is responsible for this monstrous
musical endeavour? Let's start at the back. Dan Rob [DR] rocks the drum kit like he rocks the ladies- fast & furious. Sporting a bulletproof beard and a bad
ass attitude, the man sometimes referred to as "Doggie Style" provides the backbeat for this five piece wild attack. Evan on Top is this bands resident man of
mystery. You won't get a word out of this maestro of smooth. All you'll get is all you could want: bass lines of gold and backups of rusted steel. Wielding what
you might mistake for buzz saws are Jonny Anal and Mike Evil. These six string ax slingers deliver the rock with a hearty side dish of sleaze. They team up
for the two-guitar attack that is responsible for the piercing barrage of distortion that rounds out the virile musical slide of these raunch ranchers. Last and
fast is Matthew L. Torley III, an eight-foot warrior from beyond the grave. Tasteless, tactless, and twisted, he bellows the band's anthems of desire and
danger. He is without a doubt a man who is to be feared. A front man like none before him, he is the head master of this conservatory of chaos- The Sex
Machines. They deliver rock 'n roll. They deliver it fast. The deliver it hard. They deliver it tight. They deliver it right. Right On. This band was made to be the
musical act at the porn convention in hell. Finally, in the fashion of so many late night news broadcasts, we'll propose a question:
It's midnight. The show is over.
Do you know where your daughters are?

Statch And The Rapes / Dayglow Abortions sited in southern Oregon political problem.
VIBES director concerned by council member’s comments
By Jessica Smith

A Medford City Council member’s questions about the VIBES dance hall has the club director worried about the establishment’s reputation in the community.

Tom Cole, executive director of Kids Unlimited, which opened VIBES in March, said statements made by Councilman Curt Bennett at a council meeting Oct. 19 cast a shadow over what the club is trying to do for local kids.
"It really felt like (Bennett was) trying to destroy our credibility," said Cole, who plans to address the council at its Nov. 2 meeting. "It just felt crummy."
Bennett, however, said he was justly raising concerns brought to his attention by parents who objected to a now-canceled punk concert that was to be held tonight at VIBES.
Because the city gave Kids Unlimited $25,000 toward VIBES, located at 1 E. Main St., Bennett said he wanted to be sure public funds were being used as intended.
A private organizer had rented the VIBES facility for the concert, Cole said. The show was not sponsored by the teen club, he said.
Still, Bennett said he was troubled by the event.
A flyer for the concert announced that bands featured at the show would include The DayGlo Abortions, Statch and the Rapes, and Humanicide. It also was billed as an all-ages show.

Bennett said he worried that VIBES was trying to compete with clubs that serve older crowds. Since VIBES’ mission is to provide a smoke- and alcohol-free environment for the under-21 crowd, Bennett said he questioned the appropriateness of a mixed-age concert.

"I wanted parents to be aware of what was going on down there," said Bennett. "But am I just trying to discredit (Cole)? No. I think he does a lot of good in the community."

Cole, however, said the damage has been done. Although Cole canceled the punk concert last week after learning about the names of the featured bands, he said he’s concerned that parents who watched the council’s televised Oct. 19 meeting will get the wrong idea about VIBES and its programs.

"I’m upset that there wasn’t more consideration given to this organization for what we’ve done," Cole said. Kids Unlimited, he said, works with thousands of area youths in after-school programs, summer camps and teen activities to promote education and responsibility.

After receiving a request from Mayor Lindsay Berryman to appear at the council’s study session this week to discuss VIBES, Cole asked that he instead be given a chance to address Bennett’s concerns at a televised meeting. He said he’ll speak to the council at its 7 p.m. meeting Nov. 2.
